Ana M. El Tesoro begins with a domestic archive found in the attic of Ana M., a resident of Llaranes, a workers’ settlement built in the 1950s around the state-owned steel company ENSIDESA in Avilés, Asturias, on the northern coast of Spain. Conceived under Francoism as a model of industrial and social order, the neighbourhood embodied an ideal of progress that extended beyond the factory into everyday life. Rooted in the artist’s personal relationship with both Ana M. and the territory, the project explores what remains outside this official representation. Bringing photographs, objects and domestic traces into dialogue with institutional and industrial records, the research constructs a counter-archive whose associative logic is shaped by Ana M.’s experience of schizophrenia, with ambivalence sustaining the coexistence of contradictory meanings. As the industrial landscape undergoes demolition and transformation, other histories emerge: the documented but unmarked mass graves of Francoist repression, the domestic labour that sustained industrial production, and the violence exerted on women’s bodies.
